It was once the official highway established by the Spaniards in Colonial times to connect these significant mining towns. She was a character that stood out with her strong personality particular to the Huasteca. This is a dirt road and hiking route that I later took after camping in the desert. The journey on foot allowed me to soak in the beauty and could not help but wondering how much had that road had actually changed in 500 years. Retrato de mi abuela paterna Ana María Azuara. It would be buried in the sacred earth within its own universe. The heart of the maguey is used to make Mezcal in Mexico. The word Mezcal comes from Náhuatl “mexcalli” or cooked maguey and it is a significant culural drink. It is first buried in the ground similar to the process of preparing barbacoa and then fermented. The destillation process has deep roots in the the 16th century introduced by the Spaniards which in turn learned it from the Moors 800 years earlier. I painted an eye and a red ribbon both symbols of protection in the mexican folklore. A little bizarre yet playfully allegoric. ¿Qué pasaría si la planta de Maguey o Agave tuviera un corazón? Estaría enterrada en la tierra sagrada dentro de su propio universo. El corazón del maguey se utiliza para hacer Mezcal en México. La palabra Mezcal viene del náhuatl "mexcalli" o maguey cocido y es una bebida cultual importante. Primero se entierra en la tierra de forma similar al proceso de preparación de la barbacoa y luego se fermenta. El proceso de destilación tiene raíces profundas en el siglo XVI, introducido por los españoles, que a su vez lo aprendieron de los moros 800 años antes. He pintado un ojo y una cinta roja, ambos símbolos de protección en el folclore mexicano.
